How to use this calculator

Add the yearly costs

Enter annual wage or owner drawings, an annual superannuation allowance, and vehicle, insurance, tools, phone, software and other business costs. Use costs excluding recoverable GST where applicable; avoid counting an expense twice.

Count the hours you can bill

Multiply billable hours per week by working weeks per year. Allow for holidays, quoting, admin and travel you cannot bill. Total yearly cost divided by these hours is the break-even cost per billable hour.

Add your target profit

Add your desired profit per hour to break-even for the ex-GST rate, then multiply by 1.10 for the GST-inclusive estimate. Materials and job-specific charges need separate allowances. This does not calculate income tax or super obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a recommended market rate?

No. It is an estimate based on the figures you enter, not a survey of what other businesses charge. Review the result against your own work and costs.

Why use billable hours instead of hours worked?

Unbilled admin, quoting and downtime still need funding. Spreading costs over only the hours you can bill shows what those hours need to recover.

Does the super input calculate a legal entitlement?

No. Enter your own annual dollar allowance. Check the appropriate amount for your situation with your accountant or the ATO.

Are my figures saved or sent anywhere?

The calculator runs in your browser. Its inputs are not sent anywhere or saved in browser storage. Reloading resets the figures.
